Understanding Tinnitus

Tinnitus, or the perception of noise in one or both ears when no external sound is present, can be a challenging and sometimes distressing condition. I’ve lived with tinnitus for over 20 years and I know how challenging it can be. While there is currently no cure for tinnitus the good news is that hypnotherapy has been recognised as a valuable tool in managing tinnitus symptoms (Mason & Rogerson, 1994). Chronic tinnitus can lead to stress, sleep problems, and concentration difficulties. Around 13% of adults in the UK experience prolonged tinnitus (NICE, 2023) and it can significantly impact on their quality of life.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Hypnotherapy can aid in tinnitus management by addressing the emotional and psychological responses to the condition. A crucial part of managing tinnitus is stress management, as stress can exacerbate the symptoms (Langguth et al., 2012). Hypnotherapy, known for its effectiveness in stress reduction, can help cultivate relaxation and a sense of control.

In addition to stress management, our sessions may also cover:

Sleep Hypnosis: A good night’s sleep is important for many health conditions but people with tinnitus may struggle to achieve this. Sleep hypnosis (Wofford et al., 2023) doesn’t put you to sleep during the session, instead the aim is to address the negative attitudes keeping you awake and prompt you to adopt new beneficial habits.

Ego Strengthening: Persistent tinnitus can batter our self-esteem. Hypnotherapy can help you to manage the emotional and psychological impact of the condition by enhancing your overall wellbeing, self-esteem, resilience and coping abilities (Lavertue et al., 2002).

Pain Management: For some people the experience of tinnitus is similar to that of chronic pain (Moller, 2000). Studies have demonstrated that hypnotherapy can help reduce the perception of pain and manage pain-related symptoms (Taylor & Genkov, 2020).

My Approach to Tinnitus Management

I combine a personalised approach to all of these areas, helping you to manage your tinnitus symptoms. I understand all too well that living with tinnitus can be challenging, but you can reduce the impact that tinnitus has on your daily life.

Over the course of our sessions we'll work together to manage your stress levels, introduce positive coping strategies, and 'reframe' your perception of tinnitus.
